CU History
United Bay Community Credit Union formed to further promote the idea of people helping people. That idea is still passionately alive today.
Founded in 1949 as the Chevrolet Employees Federal Credit Union, plant workers returned to work after a 110-day strike and many were struggling to meet financial obligations. People found themselves in desperate need, and concerned co-workers knew it was up to them to offer their support. A collective of workers agreed to chip in $5 to create a lending pool for those in need. The $5 contribution still represents one share in UBCCU today.
Membership later expanded to include employees of over 200 additional partner organizations around Bay County, and in 2003, expanded to include anyone who lives, works, worships or attends school in Bay, Saginaw, Midland, or Arenac Counties. As the credit union grew from city to community, the name changed as a reflection, and United Bay Community Credit Union was born.
In 2008, we opened a new branch office in Pinconning, Michigan, to help the members who live in the northern areas we service and on May 1, 2012, we expanded again when Access First Federal Credit Union merged with UBCCU. With this last addition, our field of membership expanded to VanBuren and Kalamazoo counties.
In 2020, we expanded again to welcome individuals who reside within the entire state of Michigan. As digital technology increases, we are able to more easily serve individuals and allow them to utilize our services.
United Bay Community Credit Union has always existed as neighbors helping neighbors. Whether you need a savings account or help planning your investments, UBCCU is here for our members.
