Debit Card Frequently Asked Questions:

Q.

What is the difference between an ATM card and a Debit card?

A.

For a debit card, a checking account is required.  Debit cards can be used to make purchases anywhere MasterCard is accepted.  A debit card can be used for both purchases and ATM transactions.

Q.

How do I reach the Debit Card department?

A.

Business hours are Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.  The telephone number is (800) YOUR-OWN / (800) 968-7696 and navigate with option 7.

Q.

What if my card is lost or stolen?

A.

Please call (800) YOUR-OWN / (800) 968-7696 and navigate with option 7 followed by option 1.  You may also call the Lost/Stolen line directly at (800) 528-2273.

Q.

I don't remember my PIN or want to change my PIN.

A.

If you don't know or remember your PIN, a PIN can be mailed to you by calling the credit union during business hours or can be changed at any UBCCU branch.  Additionally, if you know your PIN but want to change it, you may do so anytime at any of our ATM machines or by calling (800) 851-4859, enter option 67 to change your PIN.

Q.

I have not received either my card, my PIN, or both.

A.

For security reasons, the card and the PIN are sent separately.  It can take up to 11 working days to receive the card and PIN in the mail.  If you think that it has been past that time, please call the credit union for further information.

Q.

What is my debit card limit?

A.

If you choose a debit and authorize the transaction using your PIN number, the limit is $500.00 (If the funds are available) in a 24 hour period.  This includes both purchases and ATM withdrawals.

If you choose credit and sign your name for authorization, is $2500.00 (If the funds are available).  This limit is not per transaction or per 24 hour period. Please refer to the following examples.

Example:  If you spend $2500.00 in one day and on one transaction, you must wait until that amount is deducted from your account to do another "credit" transaction.

Example:  If you do a $500.00 transaction one day and $2000.00 the next day, your limit is used. No more transactions can be done on your account with your card until one of the amounts clears your account. Such as when the $500.00 transaction clears your account, you will have $500.00 available to use but the $2000.00 will be unavailable.

Q.

Is there any reason I would ever want to press "debit"?

A.

If you want to get cash back over the amount of the purchase you would have to press "debit" or "ATM" and then enter your secret PIN.  This allow you to skip a separate trip to the ATM and avoid possibly paying an additional ATM withdrawal fee.

Q.

If I press "credit" do I incur debt?

A.

No.  The card works the same way for purchases no matter whether you use it as "credit" or "debit".  You still have to subtract the amount of the purchase from your check register.  Purchases will be automatically deducted from your checking account, similar to what happens when a check clears or when you  withdraw cash from an ATM.

Q.

What if my card is stolen out of the mail?  Can the thief activate it?

A.

No.  The only way your card can be initially activated is by calling the 800 number that comes with the card.  The card owners social security number and date of birth are also needed to activate the card.

Q.

What if a thief uses my debit card?

A.

You have no more liability for a lost or stolen debit card that you would for a credit card!  If a thief withdrew funds from your account and caused checks to bounce, United Bay Community would even cover your NSF fees, as long as you let us know the card is missing. If your card is lost or stolen, let us know immediately and we will disable the card.

Q.

What if I did not authorize the debit card transaction?

A.

There is a debit card dispute form click here that will need to be filled out and returned to the credit union.  If there is more than one debit card on the account, please call the debit card department at (800) YOUR-OWN / (800) 968-7696 and navigate with option 7 followed by 1 to determine which owner on the account needs to sign the form. That card will be stopped and a new card will be issued to you for further protection to you and your account.
