Credit Union History
The credit union began around the idea of people helping people. Today it is a concept that is still in effect.
The credit union began in 1949 as employees of Bay City Chevrolet were returning to work after a 110-day strike. Unable to meet their financial obligations, many employees were on the brink of losing their jobs due to their wages being garnished by creditors. People were in need of help and concerned co-workers knew something had to be done. Workers agreed to chip in $5 to lend to those co-workers in need. The $5 contribution still represents one share in the credit union today.
The credit union name was later changed to United Bay City Credit Union. Membership expanded to include employees of "partner" companies. UBCCU membership was available to employees of over 200 Bay County companies.
In 2003, membership eligibility in the credit union expanded to include anyone who lives, works, worships or attends school in Bay, Saginaw, Midland, or Arenac County. As the credit union made the switch from "city to community", the name was changed to United Bay Community Credit Union.
